Bruno Chandon, Hazang's creator, share with you his experience and the story of his young company.
Passionate of audio and engineer by training, I fell in love two years ago with a wonderful place, where I had the chance to live for one year : Vietnam.
The country sheltering plenty resources, this trip was for me a real opportunity to learn more about the traditional know-how of the locals, and I could only be fully seduced by their crafts. I have been initiated with Marie, a french designer living in Hanoi for 8 years, working in collaboration with local craftsmen to create YNOT, her design agency.
A lot of craft villages are located at the North of the country, in which small communities work together on the creation of unique objects such as furniture, rush mats, bamboo birdcages, ceramics or even fabrics.
Crafts is one of the most important business sector in Vietnam, and many have their origin from neighboring traditions such as Chinese, Indian, or even Malay. However over the centuries, these traditions, have evolved into a real know-how distinctly Vietnamese. Among those, the « coiling bamboo », a fabulous technique, passed down from generation to generation allows the entire village where I lived for a a while to sustain. This technique was my first inspiration for the conception of my speakers.
During my stay, I met Chung, a Vietnamese craftsman. We spent days working together. I discovered his universe, his family, his way of life : a fascinating meeting during which we had the idea to create an object thanks to this famous technique of coiling bamboo.
Hand-made and with only a few tools, each speaker is unique, and each production stages helps craftsmen of a village to live. Indeed, the work is quite collaborative in the village, and a kind of cooperative is getting organized, without giving its name, to create these objects. We worked all together for this product full of story and culture, and today we are very proud of it.
But where does the name « Hazang » come from ? Hà Giang (pronounced Hazang) is a region at the North of the country : a wonderful place, where its able to discover old mountains, rice fields, bamboo forest, and where live many ethnicities. Authentic landscapes and abundantly nurtured of Vietnamese culture…It’s in this setting that my ideas were born (I have to say that the place had everything to inspire me), how could it be more natural than naming this project like this.
